$2.5 Indian Gold Coin

Minted from 1908 to 1929, the 2 1/2 dollar Indian Head represented a departure in design with no raised edge and an incuse design–sunk below the surface of the coin. Famed sculptor Bela Lyon Pratt designed the coin. The artistry of the design was condemned by some numismatists of the day, but that has mellowed with time. Today, Pratt’s design is recognized as part of the early 20th-century renaissance of American coinage.
